CSAV Hawaii: Bracing Bookshelves for Earthquakes

Hawaii is the most beautiful place to live, but we do have earthquakes. The mechanisms are analyzed, and footage of past earthquake damage is shown. Survivor Jack Straka describes the 1975 EQ and tsunami at Halape. Architect Virginia Macdonald explains how household items tumbled in the 1983 EQ. Anutie Lita coaches her nephews on how to secure bookshelves and water heaters to the wall so they cannot fall over and cause damage. This is part 1 (of 4 parts) of CSAVs 1997 video, Earthquake and Volcano Hazards on the Island of Hawaii, produced with FEMA grant funding. Big Island actors include the inimitable Angie Libadisos Baker, portraying Auntie Lita, who visits her various relatives to make sure they are strengthening their homes against future earthquakes.
